What is ABS system

ABS stands for Anti-lock Brake System, a technology that was introduced in the late 1950s. ABS is designed to prevent skidding and maintain traction with the road surface like a car brake. The ABS

controller can sense when a wheel is about to lock up under heavy braking, then pulses the brakes many times per second until you stop.

The absence of brake fluid in the master cylinder can be caused by a leak in any part of the braking system or by excessive wear of the brake linings.

The two main causes of excessive lining wear are hard-driving and riding the brake pedal. Hard driving causes the brakes to overheat, which can cause severe lining wear and overheating of wheel cylinders and calipers and can result in total brake failure. Riding the brake pedal puts continuous pressure on the brake linings, causing them to wear out faster than normal.

How do ABS systems work?

Modern ABS system for passenger cars have four-wheel sensors that monitor wheel rotation speed. The speed sensor generates an electrical signal that is proportional to wheel speed; this signal is sent to a computer that compares each wheel’s rotational speed with that of the others. If a wheel is rotating significantly more slowly than the others — indicating it may be about to lock up — hydraulic valves built into the ABS modulate brake fluid pressure to that wheel, reducing braking force until traction is regained, then reapplying braking pressure.
